Let us (and others) know your stories. The problem is that you have to tell grub rescue about the right partitions on every reboot. Once the partitions are gone you're free to make a new one, as large as the drive can hold or as small as you want. Backup the data from the mounted drive.

So if you are able to put on that original partition table (using cfdisk from your live CD or any other partitioner) you partitions might still be there and accessible.
